The Roles and Responsibilities of Business Analyst


In any organization there are various roles related to Information Technology department. They may belong to technology, functions of system or functions to business as well.

The B.A or Business Analyst related to IT is a key position or bridge between IT and Business 


Who is Business Analyst

The business analyst is a liaison or bridge between the Business and Technology. He or She see the see full bird view of business.

Identify opportunities for improvement, find ways to improve processes or implement new process , increase the effectiveness and efficiency.

The work , process , team or task that needs to be implement or enhance, could be small or large and it could be done in few hours or few years. The mater is implementation or improvement of process.

An example of a business analyst task to automate an invoice generation and sending process which may take less time and efforts compare to manual invoice sending to customer.


Formal definition of Business Analyst 

According to IIBA’s the Business Analyst is a  liaison among stakeholders from inside and outside the organization  to understand the structure, policies and operations of an organization and to recommend solutions that enable the organization to achieve it’s goals.

From the above definition the few points are very clear about the Business Analyst. The person should know about the organization which includes the current processes of organization, the vision and mission of the organization. Knowledge about stakeholders and system of the organization as well.


Business Analyst Roles and Responsibilities 

The Business Analyst focus on solving problems faced by both side i.e. Business and Technology , by focusing on the full picture of business and processes. 

The BA sees the changes inside and outside the organization and try to incorporate them with in business by using their expertise as well as the stakeholders.

 On the other side a problem or change might raise by business that will be transformed as a technical statements towards technology team but it might not require every time.

Wise versa technical solution or statements also converted into common business language by business analyst for business or management.


Problems of a Business

Business problems could be anything issue, problem or process which faced by business and they are looking for solution or betterment or any alternative for this problem.


Solutions of Business Problems

The business analyst looking for the solution of these problems by understanding the issue, process or even from Technology and get the best working solution from Technology, process improvement.

These situations might not only focus on using technology and technical teams but it could be solve by operation handling, define or enhance existing processes.

The focus of business analyst is to get effective and efficient solution which increase the performance and might impact on organization high profit.


Skills set of a Business Analyst 

The good business analyst is has a good focus on both technical and non technical side. 

Have good passion, communication and sort of management skills. Let's take a quick overview of different skills of a Business Analyst 

Technical skills

  • Good understanding and clear concept related to Technology and understanding of systems
  • Knowledge of information technology software, hardware and may be engineering.
  • Know the techniques of complex modeling.
  • Able to understand read Technical Documents and technical flows etc.

Analytical Skill

The business analyst must be a good analyst. He or she needs to analyze the problem or statements from both side. Understand the concept of the problem or solution.

It is not necessary that the business analyst deep dive into this but may have at least high level concepts.

Should have basic skills of management, documentation, charts creation 

Communication skills

The role require lot's of communication that could be verbal or written, presentation to different level of stakeholders. Clear the confusions or questions or even conflict between members of organization.

Sometimes motivate the team members as well.

Documentation 

  • prepare and update BRD Business Requirements Document
  • Prepare high level flow diagram of process
  • Change management


Business knowledge 

The business analyst must know about the  business, the business terms , the flow of business, organization vision and mission. As most of time they represent business towards technology.

  4. Stakeholders management

It is not necessary that the business analyst should be master of all above and others skills. The much knowledge and experience they have the more effective and efficient solution will deliver to the organization which impact on positive growth of the organization.
